Czech Republic moves to historically best eighth place in IIHF rankings

After the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games concluded, the International Ice Hockey Federation updated the ranking of women´s hockey national teams. While Canada jumped over the United States to grab the lead and Switzerland moved up to third place following their bronze-medal finish at the Olympics, Team Czech Republic climbed to number eight in the standings, which is the highest in its history.

The ranking is determined by the results of all big tournaments from the last four seasons, including these past Olympics, its qualifier and the 2011, 2012 and 2013 World Women´s Championships. Last year, Team Czech Republic participated in the first WWC of its history and moved into the top ten of the rankings for the first time, too. In this last update, its position was helped by the fact that 2010 Olympic Games results don´t matter anymore. Slovakia took part in them and now fell to the tenth position.

With each season points received from the IIHF events lose 25 percent of their value. The points are a key factor while determining consistence of groups in WWC and OG preliminary rounds and OG qualifiers.

Top 15 of the IIHF rankings

1 Canada 2,960 points +1
2 United States 2,940 pts -1
